The Mountain of God

Oldonyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in Maasai, is Tanzania’s most sacred and unique volcano. Rising to 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) in the northern part of the Rift Valley, it is the world’s only active natrocarbonatite volcano, known for its rare, black volcanic lava and dramatic eruptions.

Trekking Oldonyo Lengai offers a one of a kind adventure. Climbers start from the Maasai villages at the base and ascend through rugged volcanic landscapes, rocky trails, and ash covered slopes. The summit provides stunning panoramic views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and the surrounding volcanic plains, often at sunrise, creating a surreal and unforgettable experience.

Oldonyo Lengai is also culturally significant it holds spiritual importance to the Maasai people, making the climb not only an adventure but a journey into Tanzania’s rich traditions.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to trek Oldonyo Lengai is during the dry season (June to October) when the trails are safer and visibility is at its best. Avoid the wet season (November to May) as heavy rains make the volcanic slopes slippery and more challenging.
